"I am so touched by the courage, hope and faith
some people have in times of terrible illness. You know, I often
think of people in need of a transplant of an organ, when they lie
down on the surgical table, surrounded by blinding lights and metal
noises. I wonder what they think of besides themselves, their loved
ones, the happy, sad, good or bad moments in their lives. Are they
scared, or does the willingness to live take over the weak and sad
feelings?
This painting illustrates heart transplant surgery,
the historical moment in some people's life, the experience of a
new and welcome second chance. The new heart enters in this man
or woman who is so anxious to receive it and regain his or her loss.
Is it a loss when something in our body isn't working properly and
it must be replaced, or should we think of it as a gain."
